Three-in-One Solution – Definition and Use
A three-in-one solution is a single-step chemical treatment designed for ferrous metals (mainly mild steel) that combines:
- Mild Degreasing – removal of light oil and shop soil.
- Cleaning / De-rusting – dissolves light rust and oxides.
- Phosphate Coating Formation – deposits a thin iron-phosphate film on the surface.
It is usually a phosphoric acid–based blend containing surfactants, accelerators, and sometimes rust inhibitors.
Video Lecture
How it works
- Phosphoric acid dissolves rust and simultaneously reacts with steel to form an insoluble iron phosphate layer.
- Surfactants & solvents loosen and emulsify oil, grease, and dirt.
- Accelerators (like sodium nitrate) promote fast, uniform phosphate coating.
- Phosphate film gives a microscopically rough, adherent, corrosion-resistant base for paint.
Uses
- Surface preparation before painting or powder coating – provides adhesion and corrosion protection.
- Wiping/Brushing – for small or maintenance jobs (field touch-up, repair coating).
- Spray application – in automotive, appliance, or general engineering industries.
- Dip tanks – for batch treatment of fabricated components.
- Rust conditioning – on lightly rusted parts where blasting is not feasible.
- Cost saving – avoids three separate steps (alkaline cleaning → acid pickling → phosphating).
Limitations
- Effective only for light oils and light rust (not heavy scale or baked-on grease).
- Coating weight is light (0.2–1 g/m²), less protective than heavy zinc/manganese phosphates.
- Best used where mild corrosion resistance and good paint adhesion are sufficient.

Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
1. Wiping or Brushing Method (Manual Cleaning)
- Dilution: 3–5% concentrate in water (30–50 mL per liter)
- Surface prep: Remove loose rust, oil, and scale.
- Application:
- Dip a clean cloth or brush in the solution.
- Wipe/brush onto the metal surface evenly.
- Dwell 2–3 minutes for reaction.
- After-treatment: Wipe off residues with dry, lint-free cloth. Do now rinse with water.
- Painting: Apply primer/topcoat immediately on the dried and well cleaned surface within 30–60 minutes.

2. Spray Method
- Dilution: 3–4% in water
- Operating temp: 25–40 °C
- Spray pressure: 1.5–2.0 bar
- Spray time: 1–3 minutes, ensuring full coverage
- Drain: Allow excess to run off.
- Drying: Wipe or blow-dry; paint within 1 hour.
3. Dip Method (Immersion)
- Dilution: 3–5% in water
- Bath temperature: 25–40 °C
- Immersion time: 2–5 minutes depending on rust/soil level
- Agitation: Mild air or pump circulation recommended
- Rinsing: Not required; allow to drain
- Drying: Hot air or oven-dry at 80–100 °C if possible
- Painting: Coat within 1 hour
Quality Control & Maintenance
- Free Acid (FA): 10–15 points (titrate with NaOH).
- TA/FA ratio: 3–5.
- Soil loading: Maintain ≤ 2 g/L oil/grease. Dump/recharge as needed.
- Bath life: Weeks depending on throughput; replenish with concentrate.
