Marks and Itching on Leg

Dr E. Ramanathan PhD

The marks and itching on leg may be due to folliculitis or insect bites. This may be due to several possible causes:

Possible Causes

  1. Scratching due to itching
Repeated scratching can cause small red sores and scabs.
  2. Insect bites
Mosquito or bedbug bites can lead to small red bumps, itching, and later dark spots.
  3. Folliculitis (infection of hair follicles)
Small pimples or boils can form around hair roots due to bacterial infection.
  4. Allergic reaction
Soap, creams, chemicals, or certain foods can trigger itchy rashes and bumps.
  5. Dry skin
Excess dryness can cause itching and scratching, which then leads to wounds.

Things to Watch Out For

  • If sores become swollen, red, pus-filled, or painful → could be bacterial infection.
  • If you have diabetes, even small wounds can easily get infected and need care.

What You Can Do

  • Keep the area clean and dry.
  • Avoid hot water scrubbing; wash gently.
  • Do not scratch.
  • Apply a mild antiseptic or antibiotic ointment (e.g., Fusidic acid, Mupirocin) — only after doctor’s advice.
  • If itching is severe, an antihistamine (like Cetirizine, prescribed by a doctor) may help.

When to See a Doctor

  • If the sores spread quickly.
  • If you notice pus, severe pain, or swelling.
  • If you get fever or fatigue.
  • If you have diabetes and wounds are not healing.

Disclaimer

This looks most likely to be folliculitis or insect bites with scratching. But only a dermatologist can confirm the exact cause.
