Degreasing Powder Formulation Guidelines

Creating an effective degreasing powder involves selecting ingredients that can break down and
emulsify grease and oils, lift dirt, and provide some level of abrasion for scrubbing.

Degreasing Powder Formulation
Ingredients:

  • Sodium Carbonate (Washing Soda) – 30-40%
  • Sodium Metasilicate – 10-20%
  • Sodium Tripolyphosphate (STPP) – 10-15%
  • Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda) – 10-15%
  • Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate (SDS or SLS) – 5-10%
  • Nonionic Surfactant (e.g., Ethoxylated Alcohol) – 5-10%
  • Tetrasodium EDTA – 1-5%
  • Fragrance (optional) – 0.1-0.5%
  • Colorant (optional) – as desired

Functions of Each Ingredient:

Sodium Carbonate: Acts as a builder, pH adjuster, and aids in breaking down grease.

Sodium Metasilicate: Provides alkalinity, acts as a corrosion inhibitor, and enhances cleaning
efficiency.

Sodium Tripolyphosphate: Acts as a sequestrant to soften water, preventing scale formation
and enhancing cleaning.

Sodium Bicarbonate: Provides mild abrasiveness and helps in deodorizing.

Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate: A surfactant that helps in emulsifying grease and oils.

Nonionic Surfactant: Enhances the cleaning power by emulsifying oils and greases.

Tetrasodium EDTA: Acts as a chelating agent to bind hard water ions and improve cleaning
efficiency.

Fragrance: Adds a pleasant smell to the product.

Colorant: Provides an appealing appearance to the powder.
Procedure:

Mix Dry Ingredients:
In a large mixing container, combine sodium carbonate, sodium metasilicate, sodium
tripolyphosphate, and sodium bicarbonate. Mix thoroughly until evenly blended.

Add Surfactants:
Add sodium dodecyl sulfate and nonionic surfactant to the dry mixture. Ensure they are
evenly distributed throughout the powder.

Incorporate Additives:
Add tetrasodium EDTA, and if desired, incorporate fragrance and colorant. Mix thoroughly
to ensure even distribution.

Packaging:

Once all ingredients are thoroughly mixed, package the degreasing powder in moistureresistant
containers to prevent caking and maintain product efficacy.
Notes:
Safety: Handle all chemicals with care, using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
such as gloves, goggles, and masks.
Testing: Perform efficacy tests to ensure the degreasing powder meets the desired cleaning
standards. Adjust the formulation as necessary based on performance.
Customization: The fragrance and colorant are optional and can be adjusted or omitted based
on preferences and intended use.
