Admission Counselling

by Dr E. Ramanathan PhD

Many of our parents and students do not know the difference between tuition, coaching and tutorials. Parents should admit their wards in appropriate batches based on their capacity after obtaining a suitable counselling with an acaemic mentor.

There are 5 Types of Education available currently. This is broad view about education. They are listed below. The method of transferring knowledge depends on the type of audience or students’ capacity. Both teachers, students and also parents should understand the suitability of education before selecting the institutes or individual teachers. Lectures are delivered in colleges and Universities in the advanced level. Teachings are designed for school students as a bulk process. It would be difficult to give individual attention to every student in a classroom of 40 to 50 students.

  1. Lectures in colleges and University
  2. Teaching
  3. Coaching
  4. Tuition
  5. Tutorials

At the outset, let us discuss the difference between lecturing and teaching.

Lecture vs. Teaching

  1. Lecture
    • A structured, one-way delivery of information by an instructor.
    • Typically used in large classrooms or seminars.
    • Less interactive; students mainly listen and take notes.
    • Focuses on content delivery rather than individual student understanding.
    • Example: A professor explaining thermodynamics concepts in a university lecture hall.
  2. Teaching
    • A broader, interactive process that involves engaging students in learning.
    • Can include discussions, problem-solving, practical activities, and assessments.
    • Encourages student participation and critical thinking.
    • Adapted to individual student needs and understanding.
    • Example: A classroom teacher guiding students through physics problems with discussions and feedback.

In short, lecturing is a subset of teaching, mainly involving one-way communication, while teaching is a dynamic process aimed at ensuring student comprehension and engagement.
