SaitechAI — Solids (Non-Volatile) % Calculator

SaitechAI — Solids (Non-Volatile) % Calculator Binder / Resin / Paint

Compute solids by mass from oven-loss data and follow standard test procedures with ASTM/ISO/BIS references.

Interactive Calculator

Use either the pan method (preferred) or direct sample/residue masses.

Report temperature & time with every result
Typical: 110 ± 5 °C for 60 min (ASTM D2369). For varnishes, see ASTM D1644 schedules.
Record any deviations (thick films, reactive systems, etc.).

Test Procedure (Oven Loss)

  1. Prepare representative sample (mix gently; avoid air entrapment). Follow BIS sampling guidance.
  2. Dry, clean, and precondition weighing pan or aluminium dish; record mass Wp (±0.001 g).
  3. Weigh ~1–2 g of material (high-solids may use ≤1 g). Record W1 (pan + wet).
  4. Spread as a thin uniform film to accelerate solvent release.
  5. Oven: 110 ± 5 °C for 60 min (typical for coatings per ASTM D2369). Varnishes: see ASTM D1644 schedules.
  6. Cool in desiccator (10–15 min) and weigh W2 (pan + dry).
  7. Calculate Solids % = ((W₂−Wₚ)/(W₁−Wₚ))×100. Volatile % = 100 − Solids %.
  8. Run duplicate determinations; report mean and conditions (temp/time, atmosphere, any inhibitors).
Notes & good practice
  • Highly reactive systems (2K PU/epoxy) may cure further; use shortest feasible time; record gel/skin formation.
  • Water-borne with coalescents: ensure full removal; if foaming, extend time or use step temperature with caution.
  • If splatter/volatilization occurs, use covered dish with vent or reduce sample mass.
  • Report density separately if you need volume solids (ISO 3233 route).
