🧪 1. Coating Weight (Gravimetric Method)

Standard: ASTM D 2091 / ISO 3892

  • Purpose: Measures the weight of phosphate coating in grams per square meter (g/m²).
  • Procedure:
    1. Weigh a dry, pre-cleaned metal specimen.
    2. Remove the phosphate layer using a stripping solution (typically chromic acid or nitric acid).
    3. Weigh the specimen again.
    4. Calculate coating weight from the difference.

🔬 2. Crystal Structure Analysis (Microscopy)

Standard: No fixed ASTM, but commonly done using SEM or optical microscopy.

  • Purpose: Visualizes the crystal size and morphology.
  • Optional: Use XRD to confirm phase composition (hopeite, phosphophyllite, etc.).

💧 3. Coating Thickness (Micrometric or Cross-section Method)

  • Micrometer or Eddy Current Method (ASTM B244)
  • Alternatively, cross-sectional SEM can give precise thickness, especially for microcrystalline coatings.

6. Iron Contamination / Free Acid & Total Acid Number

Standard: Internal QC / ISO 10546

  • Purpose: To control the bath chemistry.
  • Key Parameters:
    • Free Acid (FA)
    • Total Acid (TA)
    • FA/TA Ratio (ideally between 1:4 and 1:6)
    • Iron Content, pH, and temperature.

  • Purpose: Ensures metal surface is clean before phosphating.
