1. Mythological Importance: According to legend, Chamundi Hills is where Goddess Chamundeshwari killed the demon king Mahishasura. The city of Mysore derives its name from this event (Mahishasura – Maysuru – Mysore). A large statue of Mahishasura at the hilltop symbolizes this legend.
2. Chamundeshwari Temple:
– Construction: The temple is believed to have been constructed in the 12th century by the rulers of the Hoysala dynasty. Over centuries, it was expanded and developed by subsequent rulers.
– Wodeyar Dynasty Contributions: The Wodeyars of Mysore were great patrons of the temple. In the 17th century, Raja Wodeyar rebuilt and expanded the temple, and Chamundeshwari became the family deity of the Mysore royal family. The 1000-step staircase leading to the temple was constructed during their reign.
