Emulsions

Emulsions are of two types.

  1. Latex emulsion with large particle size.
  2. Colloidal dispersion with smaller particle size.

Latex

  • Has larger particle size ( >0.1 micro metre)
  • Molecular weight > 10^6
  • Resins/aqueous dispersion
  • Has milky white appearance.
  • Opaque.
  • Water borne coatings are paints containing water soluble resins or binders

Colloidal dispersion

  • Has smaller particle size ( < 0.1 micro metre)
  • Molecular weight 2 x 10^4 to 2x 10^5
  • Water solubilized resin
  • Water dispersible resin
  • Slightly hazy
  • Transluscent
