Emulsions are of two types.
- Latex emulsion with large particle size.
- Colloidal dispersion with smaller particle size.
Latex
- Has larger particle size ( >0.1 micro metre)
- Molecular weight > 10^6
- Resins/aqueous dispersion
- Has milky white appearance.
- Opaque.
- Water borne coatings are paints containing water soluble resins or binders
Colloidal dispersion
- Has smaller particle size ( < 0.1 micro metre)
- Molecular weight 2 x 10^4 to 2x 10^5
- Water solubilized resin
- Water dispersible resin
- Slightly hazy
- Transluscent
