Potassium Dichromate [K2Cr2O7]

Preparation:
It is prepared from chromite ore: FeCr2O4 / FeO·Cr2O3
Step 1:
4FeCr2O4 + 8Na2CO3 + 7O2 8Na2CrO4 + 2Fe2O3 + 8CO2
Step 2:
2Na2CrO4 (Yellow) + H2SO4 Na2Cr2O7 (Orange) + Na2SO4 + H2O
Step 3:
Na2Cr2O7 + 2KCl K2Cr2O7 + 2NaCl
Orange    →    Orange
Effect of pH:
  • Cr2O72− (Orange) + 2OH 2CrO42− (Yellow) + H2O
  • 2CrO42− (Yellow) + 2H+ Cr2O72− (Orange) + H2O
Oxidizing Character:
Dichromate ion acts as strong oxidizing agent in acidic medium.

from pyrolucite ore [MnO2]

Step 2:
3MnO42− (Green) + 4H+ 2MnO4 (Purple) + MnO2 + 2H2O
Oxidizing Character: (Oxidation in acidic medium)
